Have you ever thought about the fanny letters and numbers like NFO a 09, NFO n 23,
NFO fs 09 22 or NFO w 63 and did you understand what they were talking about?
In the beginning I had no idea at all and I like to offer you now a short lesson about
the Forest Cat colours.

To begin with, let's take the 3 letters NFO. They stand for NORWEGIAN FORESTCAT.

Next, Forest Cats are divided into 9 colour groups:

NFO-category
colour
1
Solid black or solid blue (diluted black)
(the "blue" is "breeder speak" for the colour folks usually call "grey")
2
Solid black with contrasting bits of white, or solid blue with white
3
Black tabby or blue tabby
4
Black tabby with white, or blue tabby with white
5
Red, cream (the diluted version of red), black tortoiseshell,
blue tortoiseshell - all of these may be either tabby or non-tabby
6
The same colours as in group 5, but with contrasting white
7
Silver (with tabby pattern) or smoke (without the tabby pattern)
8
The same colours as in group 7, but with white
9
pure white

These 9 groups are associated with corresponding letters:
They are arranged according to the basic colours:

n
black
a
blue
d
red
e
cream
f
black tortoiseshell
g
blue tortoiseshell
w
pure white

In addition to the basic colours (except for pure white):

s
silver, smoke
09
all amount of white

There are also numbers for the various tabby patterns:

21
not clearly defined tabby-pattern
22
blotched tabby (classic)
23
mackerel tabby ("tiger-striped")
24
spotted tabby

Eye colours are only defined for white cats:

61
blue eyes
62
yellow eyes
63
odd eyes (one blue, one yellow)
64
green eyes

Now we can solve the mystery of the different colours:

NFO a 09 blue with white
NFO ns 23 black silver tabby mackerel
NFO f 09 22 black tortoiseshell tabby blotched with white
NFO w 64 white with green eyes
